Cliff, Cory and Beth flew to San Francisco for the week to visit Zach, who is working for VMWare this summer. Lots of details of our trip are on the daily pages, but here are some of the highlights without having to dig through all those pictures. Zach met us at the BART station near his apartment and our hotel. We bought Muni 7-day passes and rode the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf and had dinner.

It's Cory's 18th birthday and Zach gives him a dollar to buy a lottery ticket now that he's "legal". Birthday boy has a sundae at Johnny Rocket's on the wharf and opens his present later that night. We got him a red-white-and-blue birthday cake, too, but somehow managed to not get a picture of it. | |

Then we walked (and walked, and walked) back to Pier 39 and ate at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

We rode a lot of Muni transportation today: We rode the 21 bus to near Golden Gate Park, walked south and then west through Haight-Ashbury, then through a corner of Golden Gate Park including the Botanical Gardens, then took the 44 up to Fulton Street (which runs along the northern edge of the park), and rode the 5 bus west along the whole length of the park to the ocean and saw the Dutch windmill. From there we then walked to the Cliff House for lunch, rode the 18 bus to the Palace of the Legion of Honor for the scenic overlook, then took it back down and walked a few blocks to cacth the 29 up through the Presidio to the Golden Gate bridge, walking out on the bridge, then took the 28 back into town and got off on Lombard Street at Laguna, walked to Van Ness and took the 47 bus south down Van Ness to meet Zach at the Guitar Center, where Cory bought Zach a guitar case as a late birthday present. We then took the 47 further down Van Ness to Market street and took the Metro to our hotel and Zach dropped off his computer bag and new Guitar case. Then we took the Metro to 4th street, walked the wrong way then the right way on Howard Street to find Zach's favorite Irish pub and ate there, then took the metro back to the hotel. Complete Muni map here.

Checked out of the hotel, rented a car and drove through San Francisco for a last pass, and across the Golden Gate Bridge for a view from the north of a foggy bridge. Then we drove southward to Palo Alto for lunch with Zach. During the afternoon we visited Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, and the Intel Museum. We picked up Zach for dinner at Vive Sol in Moutain View, then off to the airport where we said goodbye to Zach at the BART station. Our plane left at 11:25pm. zzzzzzz.
